COPA IBA
More than just a game. Our goal is to equip and empower people for evangelism through sports.
Copa IBA is the largest sporting tournament that builds platforms for churches and fellowships in the Klang Valley, who need support and tools for evangelism in a time when the reach to youths are dwindling.
We are a Christian not-for-profit initiative by the Inter-Brethren Assemblies Youth Development (IBAYD), whose aim is to empower the youths of today by building a passionate community for them.
Our mission is to be good stewards of all people we interact with through sports, and to share with them the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
ORIGINS
25 years on, and no signs of stopping.
Copa IBA is an annual sports event hosted by and for the churches of the Inter-Brethren Assemblies. We started from humble beginnings at the Rubber Research Institute, Sungai Buloh on 10 July 1999.
Eighteen years later, Copa IBA has blessed many participating assemblies and tens of thousands of individual lives, and we continue to do so by the grace of God.
Sports bring people together in a way other platforms may find it hard to. It is a universal language that builds bridges and tears down barriers. It is a cultural phenomenon that provides open access for people from all walks of life. With the distinct ability to attract interest, sports has the power to unite people together in playing, training, struggling, triumphing and building meaningful relationships.
For the Church, this has proven to be a strategic vehicle for evangelism, being consistently relevant to the youths of today. In other words, for us who are called to make disciples—sports is a place where people who need the Lord can be found, and conversely, a place where lost souls can relate to. It is a platform for the Gospel and the glory of God.
2020 & BEYOND
What’s in store for Copa IBA this year?
Over the years we have seen sports both new and old being included in our lineup—from Captain Ball to Futsal, Ultimate Frisbee, and Dodgeball; all of which have received great interest and participation.
We have successfully hosted hundreds of players each year, and grew to hit our maximum capacity of 1400 participants every year since 2015.
More importantly, we rejoice for the hundreds of young people who have accepted Christ as their Lord, from witnessing the Gospel through their friends and host churches.
